- The PATTERSON name came from the Lowlands
of Scotland and means "Son or follower of St. Patrick."
It is one of the 20 most common names in Scotland and is found
in all the provinces of Ireland. It is sometimes spelled PATTISON
and PATERSON.
-
When the PATTERSON
and BANE line merged, tall, lanky genes were passed along. William
Patterson (Pat) Bane of the 22nd PA Cavalry in the Civil War
was 7'2" tall and known as the "Greene County Giant".
He was reputed to be the tallest man in the Union Army during
the Civil War. His brother Stephen and cousins were killed on
the battlefield. The story is told of the doctor who paid Pat
Bane $250, in advance of his death, for his skeleton to place
in his office. Pat Bane took the money, spent it, outlived the
doctor - and kept his remains.
